Rute in subbetica Print E-mail
Written by Elizabeth Partridge

This delightful town, set amongst fields of olives at the foot of the Sierras, abounds in Museums and is famous for Anis and Mantecados (Christmas Sweets which are good to eat all year round and make perfect gifts). It is no surprise then to find two Museums dedicated to these. The Museo de Anis in Paseo de Fesno is open Mon to Fri 9 to 2, 5 to 7. The exhibition is in the old distillery and offers an interesting tour showing how anis is made with display of utensils and machinery and a collection of photographs. The Museo Artesanal de Mantecado, Turron y Marzapan is on Ctra Lucena Km 18.7. It is open Mon to Fri 9 to 2, 5 to 7 though mornings only in Summer. Other places worth a visit are the beautiful baroque chapel of San Sebastian and the ancient Church of Santa Catalina which was rebuilt in 18th century. There is one of the oldest hermitages, Vera Cruz, the Temple of San Pedro and the Sanctuary of Carmen. Take a stroll up to the ruins of Old Rute 3 kms away to find a small fort of the Moorish era and to enjoy spectacular views of the Sierras and Iznajar. Go to see the donkeys at La Casa del Burro, a donkey reserve set in the beautiful area of El Lanchar. Tour the bars and taste anis and tapas.Visit in August for the Fiesta del Carmen, the patron saint of Rute and for the Feria.
