KIDS being tedious? Are you tired of hearing: “I’m bored, can’t we do something different?” The school holidays may be a few weeks off yet, but already, with the bonus of better weather, it seems as though children have come out of their winter hibernation and want to start going out and about at the weekends. So here are a few ideas: Tivoli World Amusement Park. Where? In Arroyo da le Miel, 2 km inland from Benalmadena Costa, and can be reached by the train which runs from Malaga to Fuengirola or by bus from most resorts along the coast. What? It is the biggest amusement park on the Costa del Sol and offers rides and a varied programme of shows including Flamenco and Wild West shows. It has an area of the park called Tivolandia which is specially for younger children. When? Now open every day from 1pm until 9pm (11pm at weekends), since the beginning of May. Where? Situated right next to Tivoli World, the Benalmadena Cable Car runs to the summit of Monte Calamorro. What? A thrill not to be missed. From the top you can enjoy fantastic views over the Costa del Sol, Sierra Nevada and on clear days of Gibraltar and the North African coast. Each of the cars has space for four people and the journey takes approximately 15 minutes. At the top there is a cafeteria with terrace overlooking the coast. Donkey rides, exhibitions of birds of prey and Spanish horse riding exhibitions are included in the price of the ticket. For those who are feeling more energetic there are paths to walk back down or even to mountain bike down. The cable cars can carry bikes. When? The Cable Car is open every day from 10am to 9pm. For more information, phone 902 19 04 82 Selwo Adventure Park Where? The park is located just off the main road along the Costa del Sol near Estepona at Kilometre 162.5. What? It is a mix of nature park, safari and adventure park and is unique in Europe. It has a huge wilderness with more than 2,000 animals from all over the world such as elephants, lions, and tigers living in semi-freedom and you can explore this either in 4x4 jeeps or on foot using the overhead walkways. You can slide on a flying fox over a huge lake, try out archery and ride on the back of camels. There is a large aviary with more than 1000 birds, and there are exhibitions of birds of prey. You can also stay overnight in one of the two ‘villages’ which make up the Selwo Lodge. The cabins are round and decorated in an African style on the outside whilst being a comfortable hotel room inside with all the modern facilities that you would expect. When? Just one street back from the sea front in Benalmadena Costa opposite the Parque de la Paloma. What? Selwo Marina has created an environment where you can come to experience some of the marine life of South America. There is a dolphinarium housing dolphins and sea lions, with different pools and walkways allowing you to look in from above and also a viewing area allowing you to see their underwater behaviour. The Ice Island is home to an extensive range of species of penguins and Amazonia takes you to the tropical jungle and the marine life there. There is also a children’s playground, a touch and explore pool and many other areas to enjoy. When? Selwo Marina is open every day from February 12 to October 31 from 10am. Benalmadena Sea Life Aquarium Where? Next to the Marina in Benalmadena and can be reached by the bus which runs from most of the resorts along the coast. What? It contains a shark reef, a tank with rays, a sea snake enclosure and various other displays. They only display creatures which will be happy and flourish in this environment, and more than 2,000 creatures live happily in mock-ups of their natural habitats. Sea Life is committed to promoting education and awareness of the world’s oceans and they encourage this by involving visitors in the interactive area and by allowing some people to help at feeding times. They encourage groups from educational establishments and will meet leaders beforehand to arrange a visit to suit the specific needs. When? It is open all year from 10am till midnight. If you don’t have a car, you can get there either by bus or train from most of the coastal resorts. What? The largest water park on the Costa del Sol, Aqualand covers more than 70,000 square metres and has rides such as the thrilling Boomerang, the only one of its kind on the Costa del Sol, the incredibly exciting Kamikazee Twister, Rapids and the Black Hole. There is also an area for small children, wave pools, lots of grassy areas for those wishing to sunbathe, many restaurants and an 18-hole mini golf course When? Aqualand is open from May 21 until September 18. Its opening hours are from 10 am to 6 pm in May, June and September, and from 10 am to 7 pm in July and August. There are buses every 30 mins from the Fuengirola bus station, or alternatively you can walk from either the bus or train station in less than 20 minutes. What? As well as the range of water slides, there is a wave pool, jacuzzi, a lake for swimming in and an area of slides for kids. There is also a games arcade, a picnic area and restaurants. From June 15 till September 15 there is a daily aerobics session, a music and dance show and a parrot show. When? San Pedro de la Alantara, 7km from Marbella. What? Natura Aventura is an adventure park, which has activities suitable for all ages including rock climbing, rapelling down canyons, kayaking, archery and paintball. You could be mistaken for thinking you have just walked into deepest Africa. See these crocodiles up close and if you are lucky, you might see the star attraction, ‘Big Daddy’, a monster of a croc measuring some 4.6 metres and weighing in at a staggering 60 kg. On site there is a gift shop, restaurant/bar, play area for kids under five and an outdoor play area for kids of all ages.
