Europeanwolf.jpgEuropean wolves at Lobo Parkhowl with the wolves at Lobo ParkLooking for an evening activity that’s out of the ordinary? Then you should plan a trip to the Lobo Park. The park currently has 29 wolves living in 4 different packs (Canadian Timber, European, Alaskan Tundra and Iberian) and it’s located in the heart of Andalucia. Besides daily guided tours, this incomparable wolf park offers “Howl Nights” every Friday and Saturday evening during the summer, between May and October.

To really experience these wonderful animals that are more lively in the summer you should plan on a weekend trip to Antequera. The “Howl Night” consists of a BBQ dinner which you may enjoy on the terrace overlooking the massive El Torcal during sunset, and with some luck the wolves might already give their concerto and howl during the courses.  After a tasty dinner, the night tour begins.
During the tour you will meet Daniel, the owner of the park and experience a unique relationship between man and wolf. He and his partner Alexandra raise their wolf pups with the bottle to socialize them - necessary to lose their natural fear of humans. But it is very important to understand that he does not domesticate the wolves. Therefore you’ll never see a wolf being submissive when he enters their enclosure, which, by the way, are all vastly laid out unlike in many other animal parks. The wolves will come to greet him or maybe you’ll even see how one of them rubs its body against the legs of Daniel to share their scent and to make him be part of the pack. However Daniel does not see himself being part of the pack. He is only a visitor who will not interfere with their pack order. After the joyful ‘greeting ceremony’ you’ll see that they will go on doing their own thing.

The night tour is special because you have a completely different atmosphere and ambiance. The cooler part of the day makes the animals more active, just as it would be in the wild.

Daniel never becomes tired of answering any questions asked, and his vast knowledge of wolves and wild life as such is remarkable. His great sense of humor will definitely give you a very entertaining and unforgettable evening out. And before you leave for the night, Daniel will lead you in for a last howl with the wolves.

Since for some a drive back home might be too late, Antequera offers many good and economic hotels and it’s worth a visit as well. This typical Andalucian town is known not only for its churches but also for the Dolmens and especially the El Torcal. The remarkable mountain range is unique in Europe and should definitely be on your “to do list” when visiting the region.
If you want to come for a “Howl Night” please book in advance!
