Have you ever wondered just what inspired Picasso? So have thousands of others. In an attempt to answer this question, an exhibition has been put together at the Picasso Foundation in Malaga’s Plaza de la Merced. More than 60 works will be displayed, ranging from the late 19th century to the early avant-garde period. Works by Ramon Casas from the early part of this period are of elongated forms and almost violent brush strokes, similar to some of Picasso’s work. Other galleries show works by other artists who influenced Picasso. The final gallery is reserved for Picasso himself and will display for the first time ‘Visage d’Homme’ (1962) which was created on a fragment of brick.
The exhibition runs until October 5.

Celebrate San Juan
On the evening of Monday June 23, the longest day of the year, towns and villages up and down the Andalucian coast will celebrate the Feast of San Juan (St John) on their beaches.
The festival, coinciding with the Midsummer Solstice, celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, and celebrates with the three major elements: sun, fire and water.
With traditions dating back to pagan times, music and dancing usually begins around 9pm but the festival highlight is the lighting of huge bonfires, each topped by papier mache model figures.
On the stroke of midnight, scores of people will rush to the water’s edge as legend decrees all who bathe their feet at that time will be granted eternal beauty.
It is also traditional to dance over and around the fires, and the fun continues until well into the following morning.
In some towns, firework displays are also a feature, branches are strewn along some streets, young ladies in love are serenaded and the herb thyme is blessed.
You can of course experience the Feast of San Juan in any coastal town in Spain, but the Festival in Malaga is generally regarded as one of the best.
