A stroll along the Borbollon Print E-mail
Written by Elizabeth Partridge

Shake off the cobwebs and take a 15 km ramble in beautiful surroundings. You can take it easy, rest and admire the scenery along the way. The route starts at the entrance to the village of Rio Gordo where you cross the bridge over the Cueva River. Take the lane to your left, following the bends of the dirt road for an easy start to the walk. There is only a short stretch of asphalt at the beginning. After 4 km, you will find the first beauty spot – the Molina de Auta which is perched on a crag overlooking the river. Go beyond the chain, which is usually locked, and continue on ignoring the first path on the left and the next on the right. After a straight section, the path twists and climbs with increasingly lovely views, even that of the Enmedio Range. Here the path becomes steeper as you head towards the River Sabar reaching the Heights of Dona Ana and Gomer. At the highest point you will see a wire fence indicating the boundary and you can rest nearby at the source of two streams. Look out for Spanish Ibex! The climb down, with the walls of the Tajo del Fraile Gorge on your right brings you to the low part of the Sierra del Rey Range. The path is easy enough here and you will find a stream where you head south first, then north, on a dirt path towards Alfarneto. Walk on until you reach the source of the Borbollon Stream, a lovely place for a picnic and a rest. This is the end of the trail. Retrace your steps back to the village. Rio Gordo is set amongst fields of olives, rugged crags and the river valley. It took its name from the river besides which people settled, first Neolithic then Roman. It was the Moors though who enabled the area to grow in importance. In 1561 it was famous for having no less than three brothels! Rio Gordo is a typical white village with narrow streets where you will find niches with religious figures, some dating back to the 16th century. Of note is the 15th century Church of Nuestra Senora de Gracias. The 17th century San Sebastian Chapel has a barreled vaulted nave and richly decorated stalls. Take a look at the strange array of mirrors! At the end of May, they hold a Cattle Fair where you can sample traditional food such as Snails cooked in Stock, a gastronomical delight!, Porra, Hawthorn Mushrooms, Gazpacho with Broad Beans, Chickpea Stew and oil cakes. To find Rio Gordo, turn off the A45 at Casabermeja and follow the A356 for 18 km.
