One of the most popular spectator sports in Antequera seems to be Balomano (Handball) and if you go to watch the local team play, you’ll understand why. On a recent, cold, rainy afternoon, the Fernando Arguelles Sports Hall was packed, with standing room only, for the match between BM Antequera and MB Villa de Aranda.
It was the 23rd game of a competitive season, which has seen Antequera lose the top spot in the league to Darien Logrono. Meanwhile, their opponents of the day, Villa de Aranda, have been steadily climbing into 4th place.
It was a tense, exciting game, as the lead changed hands numerous times.

Villa de Aranda fought valiantly, defending and marking brilliantly, but Antequera kept coming back. Their handling wasn’t as sharp as usual and the local players were frustrated by the solid defence of their opponents. It was a very physical match too, which kept the referee busy with whistle and cards.
At half time, when all the players left the court, there was an invasion of youngsters who showed off their considerable skills… from toddlers to teenagers, boys and girls. There are youth teams in Antequera who play competitive games. Perhaps we were watching the stars of the future.
Once again, the local supporters were in good voice, accompanied by flags, drums and horns and there was delight, tempered with relief, when Antequera finally drew ahead to win the match 24-20.

Meanwhile, the long-awaited new swimming pool has opened its doors to the public. However, despite being told by all that you can swim whenever you wish, the reality is a little different. Like the classes at the gyms, you have to commit to a day and time and pay for the month. For example, if you choose to swim twice a week, that will be on Tuesday and Thursday; three times a week – Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Even on the official Ayuntamiento website, it clearly states that a free swim for an adult costs 2 euros for one hour…. but, just try popping in for that one hour and see if you get your swim, even if the pool is empty!
At the new pool, or pools, they offer a range of swimming classes for adults and children, together with special sessions for disabled swimmers, therapeutic swims and combined classes which include swimming and aerobics for example.
