Top marks once again to the Ayuntamiento of Antequera for providing first-rate entertainment. Their programme of cultural activities for the summer has been wonderful, and they have catered for all musical tastes, including jazz, blues, rock, pop, flamenco and classical. There have also been drama, historic tours, poetry and dancing. All these activities are completely free and are enjoyed by Spanish and British people alike. The venues are also marvellous as the events are held in the patios of historic buildings, and they give a romantic and medieval feel to the proceedings as you look up at the starry night sky and see the play of coloured floodlights on the ancient stone walls.
The most recent event, an Espectaculo Flamenco, took place in the Plaza de Toros. The event was named Biznagas, which is a whole, harmonious, scented pleasurable sprig made up of beautiful jasmine flowers. Individual musical and artistic performances were interwoven like the flowers to produce a cohesive concert of the highest standard. The threads were pulled together expertly by the narrator who spoke in verse throughout the concert providing humour and information about the various acts.
Lively and traditional music groups from Malaga began and ended the concert and had our feet tapping. A solo performance by the pianist created an oasis of peace and the solo guitarists and singers evoked an electrifying atmosphere. It reminded the audience of the antiquity of Malaga Provincia and conveyed the magic of the landscape and the duende of its people. The crowd were enchanted by a very talented male dancer; they clapped their hands rhythmically and didn’t want him to stop!
Whatever you think about bullfighting, somehow, sitting on a chair on the yellow sand of the bullring where tremendous action and emotion has happened, only seemed to enhance the fire, the passion and the art of the performers in a spectacular manner.
