Whats on and where to go in Axarquia Print E-mail
Written by andrew perry

This Easter we have our Grandchildren out for ten days and intend taking them to the Donkey Sanctuary at Nerja to adopt a Donkey, it’s a wonderful experience for the children because they can both adopt a donkey on line, call into the Sanctuary or call into many shops like ours and do it that way. It costs 20 euros for a year and you get a certificate and can call the Sanctuary anytime to see how your donkey is coming along. Visit their website www.nerjadonkeysantuary.com for more information. We at Arkwrights sell donated second hand books for the Donkey Sanctuary for one euro and its surprising how much response we get in the year. We shall also be visiting one of their favourites which is the Zoo at Fuengirola, they love it there, there are the most amazing animals which are not caged and have the benefit of similar surroundings, although obviously not as much room as they would have in the wild. The baby of a Sri Lanka Leopard was born last year, which they can’t wait to see. There are so many interesting and realistic parts to the Zoo like the visit to the Crocodiles. As you walk down a path you are confronted with crocodiles behind glass, which at first seems like you are actually in with them. It is a bit of a shock to the system the first time you see this. This Zoo also has a Madagascan Tree House which is replicated in fine detail. This place is definitely well worth a visit, the Zoo is open every day 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Telephone 952666301. For the next few months I shall be giving the readers a review of what we consider good places to visit for a meal. I personally think this is valuable information, as there are so many places to visit. Obviously we cannot possibly visit all establishments, but what we can do is give you the benefit of our experiences. What I will say is that if a favourite of yours is not mentioned it’s probable because we haven’t personally visited that establishment. Just across the road from our shop is Meson Sara, which is a typical Spanish run Restaurant where they serve the most wonderful leg of Lamb, and whilst waiting for your meal you are always treated to pate and fig & walnuts wrapped in bacon which in itself is worth going for. They usually have recommendations on the menu and the menu is also translated into English, for those of us who cannot master the language. This restaurant has a wonderful feel to it with wooden beams, much like they have in a Country Pub in the U.K. We are also blessed with an Indian Restaurant the Taj Mahal. As well as being able to eat in the restaurant also offer a take away service. We have eaten here often and have never experienced a bad meal. The owner is pleasant and once even kept open for us when he was just about to close and we didn’t feel as if we had to rush our meal. Another good restaurant in the area is in Hotel Vinuela; this Hotel is set in wonderful surroundings and has a very relaxed atmosphere. The food was extremely good when we visited and the staff were more than friendly. This restaurant is not cheap but we found that we had a wonderful meal and were not rushed at all, it was a very pleasant experience. We have had some wonderful Sunday lunches from Bar Attila, who also serve some lovely bar food every single day. They hold Bingo every Monday night and this is proving to be very popular, Quiz nights are held on a Tuesday evening, this place is always worth a visit. As well as the Indian Restaurant we also have a take away Chicken Bar, where you can get spit roast Pork too. The Town Fryer is good for take aways, they had some teething problems to start with but the food is A1 now with quite a varied menu. There is also a new kid on the block (or two to be accurate), Nibbles new Take-a-way Sandwich Bar has opened beneath Immobillaria Moroma, where you can eat in or take away sandwiches, Jacket Potatoes, pies, and I do believe they are also offering a delivery service within a certain distance of their premises. If you wish to have details regarding any of the above email me through my website www.arkwrights-groceries.com or call me on 951167674/659375603. Watch out for more on Restaurants in the Axarquia area.
