It is sometimes cheaper, depending on your destination, to combine train and plane. I just remind you that if you are over 60 and have a Spanish ID card you can go to any railway station and buy a “tarjeta dorada”. It costs 5 Euros and is valid for a year. It gives you 40% discount on any train journey throughout Spain.
From Southern Spain your train will arrive at Atocha Puerta station. Despite the kindness of the booking clerk at Santa Ana station in Antequera who took the trouble to call Madrid for information on how to transfer to the airport I found it very difficult and confusing. I am writing this in the hope that it might help the readers in the same situation.
When you leave the train platform turn right in the main hall. There is an information kiosk where you can pick up two maps: one for the commuters trains network and one for the metro. Opposite the information desk there is a bank of ticket machines. Choose one that says “cercanias” (commuters ). Introduce 1.10 euros. A ticket will appear. You then have to stick it in one of the gate for it to open. Keep it and go to “via” ( platforms) 7 or 8. Alight at NUEVOS MINISTERIOS ( 3 stops). Stick the ticket in the gate and there is another bank of machines. Choose “sencillo metro” and put 2 euros in the slot. Through the gate to platform 1 or 2. Keep the ticket again. The airport stop serving all 4 terminals is after “Campo de las Naciones”.
It takes a little less than half an hour.
