A group of people in the El Brosque area of Villaneuva del Rosario have been busy since last Christmas raising funds for Leukaemia Research. This was prompted when a close friend died but when new neighbours arrived here, I discovered their daughter Tracy was also suffering from the disease. So, a group of us decided that we had to do something positive and we put together a cookery book “Not Just Paella – Easy Cooking from Andalucia” and at €7, this has sold very well locally
It contains a selection of recipes using ingredients that are either growing in our gardens or are easily available. They are all simple to do and lots of people have said how much they enjoy them particularly the Tarta Santiago! In order to publicise the cookery book we have been organising a series of ‘Safari Sunday Lunches’. Guests enjoy Cava & nibbles, followed by starters such as Salmon in Pesto Sauce in one house, then onto another house for the main course of Moroccan Pork or Fish in Serrano Ham, then dessert such as the famous Tarta Santiago or Pancakes in Orange, Lemon & Whisky taken at a third house. All this including wine, coffee and liqueurs for €25! Along with a raffle on the day, these lunches helped us to raise funds for printing costs for the cookery book so that each book we sell now is pure profit to go to the fund. Our next Safari lunch is in fact to be a ‘Safari Saturday Supper’ and will take place on August 12th, in the evening as it will be cooler. Sadly Tracy died on 21st June. She was in her early forties and leaves a husband and three children. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends and those of us who got to know her when she visited here. She was such a pretty, happy girl who loved this part of Spain and who had been looking forward to returning. We are determined to carry on raising funds for this cause and have a Grand Auction organised for the evening of September 30th. There will be a variety of ‘favours’ for sale such as a run to & from the airport, a trailer load of horse manure, dinner for 6, Cookery lessons for men wanting to prepare a special meal for the ‘other half’ and then there are some very special items, 2 weeks in a 2 bedroom apartment in Franchoek South Africa (flights not included) and motoring enthusiasts will be bidding for a limited edition copy of ‘Driving Ambition’ – the official inside story of the McLaren F1 signed by Gordon Murray. The star attraction for this event is a separate limited ticket draw @ €10 for 2 weeks in a 3 bedroom house in Mauritius (flights not included) There are only 300 tickets for this particular item and they will be available to purchase prior to the event so even if you can’t make it on the night, don’t miss your chance to have a holiday of a lifetime for just €10! The auction is being held in Salinas and included in the €15 ticket price is a welcome drink, a two course meal, disco and the right to bid in the auction.
