This delightful walk takes you through the Doña Ana and Gomer Ravines and offers panoramic views. The trail is about 5 kms and takes two and a half hours at a steady pace.
To reach Alfarnatejo, take the A356 to Colmenar then the A6118. After 6kms take the MA157 which leads to Alfarnatejo.
From the village follow the sign to the Tallon track and the Del Fraile Heights. Go along the track for about 1500m until you reach an old cattle trough. Follow the way between Dona Ana and the Del Fraile Heights. Just beyond the pass is a wonderful view over the village of Riogordo and the Gomer Ravine.
Go south round the de la Hiedra Hill and climb to the Heights of Dona Ana. Here the ascent becomes steeper and there is no marked trail. The views from the top are well worth the effort as you look over the villages of Comares, Casabermeja and Periana and can see as far as Torre del Mar. Return by the same route to avoid getting lost.
Alfarnatejo itself is worth a visit surrounded as it is by green hills and mountains. Guerillas from the Spanish Civil War took refuge in this area. You will find castle ruins and the lovely 18th Century Parish Church of Santo Cristo de Cabrilla.
After your walk you will undoubtedly be starving so take the opportunity to try some of the local dishes such as Chickpea Stew (the best Malaga chickpeas are grown in the area), Cachorrenas Soup makes a great starter. Try salad with mint and garlic or Kid fried with garlic, migas or even mushroom stew!
Visit on Holy Week Saturday when cencerrada takes place. The youngsters run around the town ringing cowbells, trying to attract the local milk maidens into the street.
