Arenas is in the Axarquía, only 10 kilometres from Vélez-Málaga. To get there one takes the comarcal 117 out of Vélez, then heads up the winding mountain road to Arenas, right in the heart of the Bentomiz mountains. Along the way one can see the beautiful panoramic landscape to the sea, and half way there - at the venta El Palomar - one enters the municipality of Arenas.

A combination of new and old, with Moorish-style streets and houses in the Barrio Viejo and modern housing estates and villas on the fringes.  Alhaurín de la Torre situated between the Guadalhorce river and the Sierra de Mijas agriculture has ideal weather for bumper crops which is the main source of income, orange, lemon and  fruit plantations dominate the landscape.

Size: 20 Km2 Population: Approx. 500 Residents known as: Alfarnatejones Monuments: Parish church of Santo Cristo de Cabrilla, Sabar River gorge, Gómer cliffs. Alfarnatejo affectionately known as "The Pyrenees of the South" located in the northern part of the Axarquía, 36.5 kms from Vélez. High above sea level the contrasts between high cliffs and rolling hills is truly beautiful. Peaks in the area reach over a thousand metres, Pico del Chamizo at 1,637 metres and Pico del Gallo 1,556 metres or the Vilo peak at 1,412 metres.

Alfarnate, derived from the Arab Al-farnat, which means flour-mill, located in plains between the mountains in the extreme north west of the Axarquía region. The mountain pass of Puerto de los Alhazores, stands at 1,040 metres. This mountainous tregion melts into the lower valleys with the olive and almond groves.

Alcaucín in the north of Axarquía The town¹s derives it's name from Al Cautin, meaning The Arches. Situated between the Sierra de Tejeda and the Periana lowlands, between the amazing Boquete de Zafarraya cliffs and the Axarquía mountains. The Arabic influence is apparent immediately with low houses, whitewashed facades and narrow winding streets.
