Axarquia Golf, situated at Algarrobo Costa, near Velez Malaga, is the area’s one-stop shop for everything connected with the sport.
Owner Chris Gask is himself a PGA golf professional, and in addition to offering a huge range of the latest equipment, clothing and accessories, he is also only too pleased to give advice. “I love people to pop in for a chat, whether they want to buy anything or not,” said the 27-year-old, who is also a member of the European Golf Teachers’ Federation.
Chris has owned the shop for five years, and is especially geared up for beginners and amateurs, to the extent of offering lessons as well. “We have a net here at the shop so practising isn’t a problem,” he says. “And a very important part of my role is to make sure that all my customers are sold the correct equipment to suit them as individuals.”
Chris also prides himself on keeping up to date with the latest technology, using a network of golfing friends, many of whom work for pioneering manufacturers. “The first place anything new comes out is Japan,” he explains. “Then, six months later it hits America and the rest of us get it about a year later! I’m lucky in that I have friends in Japan who tip me off and I also keep up with the UK golfing magazines which get to see new products before they are launched.”
The shop is conveniently close to courses such as Baviera, Añoreta and Los Mariscos, so a trip from outside the immediate area could include a visit to Chris as well as playing. Axarquia Golf is near junction 277 of the autovia on the old coast road, N340.
