On The Square Restaurant Print E-mail
Written by Elizabeth Partridge

On The Square Restaurant, in Fuente de Piedra, is coming up to its first anniversary since opening. James Travis came in to talk to us about how things are going.  Local Connections: How would you best describe your restaurant? James Travis: Well, some people are quite surprised, when they come in for the first time, to see how lovely it is. It’s a friendly place, the service is excellent and the food is great. It’s in a great location too, actually on the square, in this pleasant village.

L.C: Can you tell us about your menu?
J.T: We have a huge choice of dishes, about 40 different ones, all with good quality ingredients. There’s an excellent Menu del Dia for only 10 euros which includes a starter, main course then a choice of either dessert or drink. Popular choices are the Deep Fried Cod and Home-Made Steak and Guiness Pie. We do prepare more vegetables too, such as the pan fried dish containing five different vegetables. All the food is freshly cooked and always comes to the table hot. We have great sauces and home-made pies.
L.C: You also do a different evening menu, don’t you?
J.T: Again, there’s a really good selection of either 2-course or 3-course meals. We have Thai Chicken Satay with a hot Chilli and Peanut Sauce; then there’s Deep Fried Goat Cheese in Almonds or even Moroccan style Lamb. I am always looking to improve the menu, to offer dishes with a difference, as well as learning about how to recreate that distinctive taste using particular Spanish ingredients.
L.C: Everything sounds delicious! We believe you have had an interesting career as a chef, cooking for a few celebraties.
J.T: Well… that’s true. I’ve cooked for Charles and Di, the Sultan of Oman as well as the Beckhams.
L.C: We understand people can just pop in for a coffee as well as coming for a full meal, but do you cater for parties?
J.T: Yes, if they book ahead of time. We recently had a mention in the Costa del Sol News because we catered for a party of people who were in the area visiting the lakes. Everyone will find a warm welcome here. Something else which is new is our piano player who comes in to play Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday lunchtimes and on Friday evening.
L.C: So, what are your plans for the future?
J.T: To continue to improve the menu, offering choice and quality of food, very reasonably priced. I am also looking for another chef!
L.C: For a great atmosphere and excellent food, On The Square, in Fuente de Piedra, is well worth visiting whether for a coffee, day or night menu or even Sunday lunch.
