When anybody thinks of building a pond they have certain expectations. Some people want a 60000litre swimming pool for their fish where others just want a nice small pretty water feature. The difficulty sometimes is matching the expectations with the required infrastructure at the right cost.

The larger the pond the more expensive it is to build, run and maintain. A large pond needs a larger infrastructure! The trick with any project is in the planning. It’s better to build a 15000litre pond with good filtration and sufficient oxygen than a 60000 litre pond that is badly filtered and too expensive to maintain.

So what’s in a well planned pond?

Planned correctly it’s easy to put bottom drains in a pond. A bottom drain on a pond is similar to a bottom drain on a swimming pool – but it has a cover on the top, so that it pulls the debris from the pool floor. Fitting a bottom drain also allows the pump to be fitted after the filter and the filter hidden from view. The filter also works more efficiently because the waste from the pool has not been chopped up by the pump. This then results in less maintenance and less problems than typical with a pump fed system

Bottom drains can also be fitted with air diffusers so that air is delivered to the bottom of the pond and oxygen levels are maintained. A well planned pond also has filters that are large enough to cope with the volume of water and fish.

5) Koi or Nishikigoi like dogs have varieties and they are judged as to how good an example they are of that variety. So a very good example at 10cm will be more expensive than a bad example at 70cm

6) Growth in Koi is related to oxygen content, temperature and quality of the water. In good conditions 30cm per year can easily be achieved!
